Who regulates telephone call charge rates?

How the Telephone Contributed to Communication

A lot of people credit the internet for making the world a more connected place but it’s worth remembering that telephones laid the first brick in this regard. Telephones made it possible for people to connect with people far away and made the possibility of instant contact for people who lived continents apart a reality. While telephones started the revolution, it was the emergence of mobile phones which actually took the revolution to its logical conclusion. You can now get in touch with anyone from anywhere through mobile phones and it’s this ability of staying in contact with anyone from anywhere that opens up all kinds of possibilities for everyone. You can go on a hiking trip and still run your business. You can go for a business meeting and still stay in touch with your family. It’s all possible because of telephones!

The Only Problem with Telephones

While there is no doubting how big a blessing telephones are, there is a problem with telephones that irk all users. The actual problem with telephones is the call rates that is applied on different calling numbers. There is a code associated with each telephone number and the code basically decides the amount you will be charged for calling on it. This is very confusing for individuals as this means that there is no set rate for making a phone call. Most people just know the call rate for one code which is normally the one that they dial the most. As a result, even when they dial a number that has a different code, they normally assume that it would be charged at a similar rate. This normally leads to a miscalculation as the rates can be low for one code and extremely high for another code. The telephone bills are normally an annoying sight for this very reason as people normally don’t take into account the amount they would be charged for calls to numbers with different codes.

Another problem with telephone call charges is that they never stay constant. You can never be sure that there will be one rate for calling at the number with a particular code. You might be charged 40p one time and you might be charged 80p the next time. The charging criteria is often made complex so that users aren’t able to understand it. And when users don’t understand the pricing system, their ignorance can easily be exploited by telephone companies.

How to Deal with Different Telephone Call Charges

The best way of dealing with different telephone call charges is to find out the relevant information from the telephone call charging regulator. Governments regulate the pricing for telephone call charges and by finding the regulatory authority and getting the charge rates directly from the authority, you can ensure that you get a list of the call charges which are approved by the government. The information would be authentic as well and therefore, you can trust it to be totally correct.

Prosper Group has all the information about regulatory authority in the UK for telephone call charges and you can easily find all the information you need about the different codes and the charging system for each one of them at the group’s website. Ofcom is basically the regulatory authority incharge and they have now defined a proper system for calling on numbers with different codes. The charges are:

For 0800 and 0808 numbers

For 0870 and 0845 numbers

Calling on 0808 and 0800 numbers is totally free from both landline and mobile phones.   Calling on 0870 and 0845 numbers would cost 3p for every minute. This does not include the amount that would be charged by the mobile phone service provider the caller uses. The amount charged by the mobile phone service provider is normally called an ‘access charge’.

For 0844 and 0843 numbers

For 01 and 03 numbers

Calling on 0844 and 0843 numbers would cost 7p for every minute. This does not include the access charge that would be levied by the mobile phone service provider.    Calling on 01 and 03 numbers from landline would cost around 9p for every minute. Calling on the same numbers from a mobile phone would cost anywhere for 8p to 40p for every minute.

You should make sure that you keep these charges in mind and also inquire about the access charges levied by the service provider on these calls. Having a list of the different calling rates would help you greatly when you will call these numbers in the sense that you will know in advance how much you will most likely have to pay for a call based on the rates and the duration of the call.
