Ofcom launch mobile sector assessment
Ofcom launched a big thing last week: the mobile sector assessment.
It looks interesting. Ofcom, as others have noted, have also launched a related blog and interactive summary. The blog and interactive summary were also launched for the PSB review, so it’s good to see Ofcom continue down this path of more informal means of engagement with stakeholders people.
(It would be great if Ofcom just had one blog, though. It would probably cut way down on the calls, correspondence and complaints it receives, which last year was over 200,000.)
Anyway, be sure to check it out — this is one of Ofcom’s smarter moves — an area where it can not only shed these silly termination charges, but also really look at coverage issues. So well done David Stewart and team.
I live in a ‘not spot’ (David: OX2 6AY). It’s soooo not a spot. It’s otherwise where they publish the OED, so you would think a mast would be around here somewhere. I’ve tried everything: tin-foil hats, standing on my recycling bin in the back of the garden … sometimes the area goes so dead my phone says ‘emergency phone calls only’.
Define emergency, I say…

Russ,
Thanks for the post, and your kind words about the MSA. There’s a lot happening in the sector at the moment, with some great opportunities (we hope) to think about regulation in some new ways.
As for the ‘one blog’ idea: it’s an intriguing suggestion. After the trail blazed by Tom and Rhona on the PSB blog, we’re very conscious of taking it one step at a time, and will no doubt try a number of different approaches to see what works best. Ideas and suggestions are very welcome.
Regards,
David
