Fincham’s MacTaggart Lecture: the Ofcom bits

In case you missed it, Peter Fincham had some very unkind words for Ofcom in his MacTaggart lecture. Here’s a sample:
‘Later in their report [Ofcom] refer to, and draw authority from, the results of a survey they commissioned. In this, 2,000 or so adults are asked whether they agree or not with a number [...]

Did Ofcom finalise the PSB Review before comments were even submitted?

OW received an interesting letter today from United for Local Television (ULTV). It is a complaint letter to David Currie of Ofcom. The substance of the complaint is this:
‘According to the public minutes of the 124th meeting of the Ofcom Board, held in Belfast on 20 May 2008:
“The Board agreed to delegate authority [...]

Ofcom reveal: junk food advertisers evading ’spirit’ of HFSS regulations

Someone recently sent me an Ofcom document called a stakeholder briefing from a few weeks ago. It’s about Ofcom’s ongoing review of its junk food advertising restrictions. Get in touch if you want a copy.
First, as a friend once said, ’stakeholders’ means something less than the public. Ofcom can talk all it [...]

Guardian’s Owen Gibson: Support for BBC licence fee eroding

Full story here. Gibson writes in part:
‘The BBC is facing an uphill battle to maintain support for the licence fee, according to a new survey that shows almost half the population do not find it value for money.
A new Ipsos Mori poll for MediaGuardian also shows that the further north you live, the less [...]

Ofcom, media / telecoms policy autumn calendar

It’s going to be a soul-destroying autumn for me as I (hopefully) finish my PhD thesis on Ofcom. My thesis will probably be like Ofcom’s Communications Market Report: heavy, chart-laden and confusing!
Meanwhile, though, Charlie Beckett at LSE-POLIS has lined-up a staggering amount of events. He writes:
Polis is busier than ever this autumn [...]

More BT Home Hub videos!

This one is an instant classic:
And another (reminds me of Fargo for some reason!):
It’s certainly telling that the BT home hub has spawned loads of youtube videos of people gleefully destroying them. I like it. Consumer empowerment and all that.
Folks, if I can get one to Georgia, I’ll blast it with some real [...]

Ofcom review industry code on under-18 access to adult content on mobiles…

Pretty interesting report here.
First Ofcom praise the overall effort behind the code:
‘Overall, we find the Code to be effective in restricting young people’s access to inappropriate content and a good example of industry self-regulation. Based on interviews with operators and stakeholders, we believe that the Code and Framework are understood and readily adopted by all [...]

Ofcom PSB review: Your views are welcome, and may be read…

I was just writing a section of my PhD thesis about the tensions (if any) between expert decision-making and decision-making that is more public-driven. Ofcom do a bit of both. Some consultations, for example, those dealing with technical issues like radio spectrum, are more expert. Others, such as the funding of quality [...]

ITV looks to Ofcom for regulatory relief

The papers over the weekend and today are full of different takes on Michael Grade and ITV’s dismal results. The one commonality — everyone is looking to Ofcom to provide some form of relief from the red-tape that requires ITV to provide certain types of content. The Times reports in part:
***
Grade’s thoughts are [...]

Suggested cover for Ofcom PSB Review Phase 2

Over at the Ofcom PSB Review blog, Rhona Parry recently wrote:
‘And while we’re on the subject, let us know if you have any better ideas for a front cover for Phase 2. We’ve got a fair bit of stick for the yellow robotic family of Phase 1 (harsh but fair), so suggestions for a better [...]

OfcomWatch South HQ: Atlanta

OfcomWatch South HQ: Atlanta

Fellow OfcomWatch co-founder Luke Gibbs and I — in full OW uniform — visited CNN HQ in Atlanta today. Our mission: spread Ofcom-related love and cheer to the new world via the world’s most trusted news source.  Unfortunately we instead found ourselves in the CNN studio tour.
Atlanta is home to both Coca Cola [...]

Media policy position open at Univ of Oxford

Hey folks, I am back from the beach but still stuck in this Atlanta heat for another week…
Here’s a job opportunity for those of you — like me — that could not get into engineering or medicine. The Centre for Socio Legal Studies (CSLS) at the University of Oxford is looking to hire a [...]
