OfcomWatch - back from holiday…
Folks, we are back in action after a few weeks of rest and relaxation. So what’s up?
* I tried an iphone. Amazing. It is so dreamy cool. What a product! Ofcom should really take a hard look at this device because it truly represents convergence — some obvious, some not so obvious. In the U.S. it is only available for AT&T wireless customers who sign a two-year agreement. Count me out on that crap deal. The phone is fantastic, but not worth a two-year commitment.
* Ofcom announced today that it will soon auction portions of the 2 GHz frequency band, including the important 2500-2690 MHz frequency band. Details are here.
* Ofcom last week announced that Jill Ainscough, formerly of Easynet, will be taking over the COO role vacated by Ed Richards when he was promoted. She starts work on August 7th. OfcomWatch hopes to interview Ms. Ainscough in due course: I’ve been curious if forthcoming European legislation (both telecoms and media-related) and the overall rise in broadband/ advertising regulation means Ofcom will add to its headcount. We’ve all been impressed with how Ofcom has managed to keep its workforce and budget in check … is that sustainable?
* Steve Bowbrick thinks the PSP is a bit of a bad idea, but inevitable. So do I.
* There was some VOIP news, but I can hardly be bothered to read it. It looks like Ofcom is simply going to require certain VOIP products (those that can make calls to landlines) to be capable of 999 access. Didn’t the FCC do that two years ago?
