Webcasters - a new hope

Wired magazine reported today that SoundExchange, the royalty collection machine for musicians, has said it will not enforce the new royalty rates that are due to kick in on Monday.

The article, “Online Radio Is Saved; SoundExchange Will Not Enforce New Royalty Rates on Sunday” which posted today, points out that SoundExchange told the U.S. Congress that it is stepping away from the new royalty rates that would have put many, if not most, webcasters out of business. This development gives new hope to webcasters who were beginning to shut down their streams in anticipation of the new royalty rates.

This new development is likely due to pressure by the public to Congress, in the aftermath of many hearings and an internet radio Day Of Silence. A mock invoice handed out to members of Congress points out that “Dead webcasters pay no royalties.”
