I just read this report from the HD Masters Conference in London. TVBEurope states:

[Ofcom's Greg] Bensberg also dismissed a suggestion that the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of ASO [analogue switch-off] be seized with a ‘big bang’ conversion of Freeview to an all-HD platform, claiming that viewers needed to have the choice of standard definition TV.

I think this is not really where Ofcom need to be aiming. The choice element for consumers should be on amount and range of content on TV, not the underlying signal quality, right? The regulatory system should aim toward giving viewers the best possible television signal quality of all times.

TVBEurope also report:

Bensberg was adamant that money-making was not in Ofcom’s remit, adding the baffling claim that the regulator could even be prosecuted for doing so. Citizen, consumer and spectrum efficiency implications remained the only issues under consideration, he said.

There goes my idea that Ofcom open a riverfront bistro called The Light Touch…
