NCC, Consumers and Heaney
It was interesting to note a number of articles at the weekend suggesting that the National Consumer Council are looking to ramp up pressure on Ofcom to force a settlement in the Sky/Virgin Media spat.
As I have said before it is amusing how many consumer groups and panels have attached themselves to this issue seemingly for publicity purposes. We never heard a peep out of some of these organisations when cable customers had service issues in the past, but now the company flies the Virgin flag and the press start to take an interest they are beating down the doors to represent cable users.
NCC pressure or not Ofcom are dealing with this issue as fast as they possibly can according to Ed Richards in his recent interview with Ofcomwatch.
And talking of consumer service issues, it’s worth noting Andrew Heaney’s new role at Carphone Warehouse (think Talk Talk). Reports suggest he was poached from Ofcom although most people we have spoken to seem to suggest he had effectively quit Ofcom and was looking for a new job. Either way it’s a great hire for Carphone Warehouse/Talk Talk because who knows the UK broadband landscape better than Andrew Heaney? And it’s probably a great time for Heaney to move because with issues like Next Generation Access investment it’s likely to start getting very tricky for Ofcom.
