European Commission: Media pluralism in 3-easy steps

Yesterday the European Commission issued this press release, highlighting the importance of ‘media pluralism’ and some steps the European Commission is doing to promote the concept. The Commission envisions three-steps:

1. a staff working paper, available here*;

2. an independent study, to be completed in 2007, on media pluralism in the Member States; and

3. a Commission consultation / communication (in 2008) on ‘indicators’ for media pluralism. This seems like a unwise attempt to impose a science-like framework on what is otherwise a fundamentally cultural issue…
*The staff paper describes NewsCorp as ‘Rupert Murdoch’s press and pay-television empire’. Empire? That’s hardly neutral language in a paper that should cover media pluralism in a professional manner.
