Swire: Poll confirms uncertainty over Governments switchover plans

In response to a poll carried out by BRMB and commissioned by the BBC governors that found that nearly half of respondents opposed the Government’s policy of making the BBC pay the costs of digital switchover, Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Hugo Swire has said:

“This opinion poll confirms the widespread uncertainty over the Government’s digital switchover policy. Other than saying that the BBC will be left to foot the bill, the Secretary of State has so far failed to front up about how much it will cost and what help vulnerable groups can expect.

The Director General of the BBC has speculated that the total cost could be on the far side of a billion pounds. Switchover has to be paid for, but the Government must be open and honest about it, rather than trying to hide what amounts to another of Gordon Browns stealth taxes in the BBCs accounts.”
