BBC will ‘not get’ desired licence fee settlement
Today’s Financial Times reports that the BBC has been told it will “not get” its desired licence fee settlement of 2.3% a year above inflation over the next 10 years.
The BBC claims that it needs an additional 5.5bn to fund the extra responsibilities put on it by the white paper, such as overseeing digital switchover.
The BBC says it will be able to make 3.9bn of savings but that will leave a funding gap of 1.6bn.
Discussions over the level of the licence fee will begin after the publication of today’s white paper, with a final decision expected in the summer.
