Paying too much for roaming? Check out the new website of the European Commission!
Yesterday, the European Commission launched a special website dedicated to international roaming tariffs. The aim of the website is by making public the roaming tariffs from the operators in all 25 EU Member States to help consumers get a better deal when using their mobile phones abroad.
We can, of course, only endorse this initiative. Apparently, the Commission must have thought: if regulators dont take action*, lets bring in the consumers! (* as no NRA has notified so far, under the so-called Article 7 procedure, any draft decision with regard to market 17, i.e.
the wholesale national market for international roaming on public mobile networks).
Nevertheless, I cant help but feeling a little sceptical with regard to the downward effect this consumer website will have on roaming tariffs. Whenever I go abroad, I’m already happy if I finish packing and collecting some tourist information before my departure. But I’m not the best example when it comes to travel preparations. No doubt that you will all find the time to check out the roaming tariffs first…!
