Internet usage in the EU 25
A report released by Eurostat (the Statistical Office of the European Communities) has just presented the results of surveys of internet usage in the 25 EU Member States as well as Bulgaria, Romania, Turkey, Norway and Iceland (the report also covers broadband connections, e-commerce and e-government). The reference period was the first quarter of 2004.
Main findings are:
* About half of the population (47%) of individuals aged 16 to 74 used the internet.
* More men (51%) than woman (43%) and more young people than old.
* 89% of enterprises were using the internet and over half of those (53%) had a broadband connection.
* Highest levels of usage by individuals were recorded in Sweden (82%), Denmark (76%) and Finland (70%) and lowest in Greece (20%), Hungary (28%), Lithuania, Poland and Portugal (all 29%).
* Highest levels of usage by enterprises can be found in Denmark and Finland (both 97%), and in Belgium and Sweden (both 96%). The lowest levels were registered in Portugal (77%), Hungary (78%), Lithuania (81%), and Cyprus (82%).
* The highest levels of broadband connection for enterprises were recorded in Denmark (80%), Sweden (75%) and Spain (72%).
The news release promises that the report is available free of charge at the Eurostat website. I have been looking for it for quite a while, unsuccessfully. The Statistics in Focus section is not working (like many others) and their search engine seems pretty deficient. Maybe you will be luckier!
