OfcomWatch revisits the ASA…
I thought it might be a good idea to revisit the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) during the holiday weekend. When we previously checked-in on the ASA, the new advertising regulator was just getting geared-up for its expanded remit.
So, what’s the ASA been up to? We would like your views (blog@ofcomwatch.co.uk). Otherwise, just rambling around the ASA website today, I learned that:
* It is wrong for an advert-leaflet to resemble a parking ticket;
* And the importance of not fooling someone into thinking your spread product is butter; and
* The ASA won’t be adjudging the merits of political adverts in the run-up to the general election.
What? No regulation of political advertising? Well, it is (wrongly) regulated in the sense that broadcast political adverts are banned in the UK. But, otherwise folks - it’s no-holds-barred action on the leaflet, internet, outdoor advertising front…!
As a public service, OfcomWatch will serve as an ad hoc adjudicator of the merits of political advertising. Just send us a 20-pound note, and a copy of the advert in question and we’ll publish our decision in due course.
