ZDNet on Ofcom’s VoIP role…
ZDNet calls for Ofcom to adopt PSTN-like standards for VoIP technologies. ZDNet also states that Ofcom’s Stephen Carter needs to ‘remember’ that ‘regulation is about making tough choices that upset vested interests for the greater good.’ Really? And what is the greater good? Taking the article at face value, it would seem that (i) uniformity and (ii) quality-of-service are the greater goods favored by ZDNet. But there are certainly other goals/values at stake, such as (i) innovation, (ii) freedom, (iii) universality/affordability, and (iv) flexibility in the face of uncertainty. Those other goals might caution against the regulatory approach advocated by ZDNet. As Clay Shirky says: ‘pick two’.
