Community Radio / Local ICT

Last week ‘Community Radio’ was officially recognised in law (via secondary legislation). Whilst this is undoubtedly a good thing - I’m one of those old romantics who actually still believes in ‘media pluralism’ - there will still be a certain amount of wrangling on the issues of a Community Media Fund, and more importantly its scope (presumably under the aegis of OfCom), as well as possible restrictions in areas served by existing commercial radio interests (see the CMA release - and accompanying information).

… and on an analogous note, the Work Foundation’s ‘iSociety’ program has produced an interesting report entitled “Proxicommunication: ICT and the Local Public Realm” (available to download).
