Ofcom to Start New Venture in Digital Television…

However, today’s FT (National News, p. 4) reports that Ofcom’s report on digital switch-over warns government that financial incentives might be required to ensure that the target of analogue switch-off in 2010 would be achieved. There appears to be the idea of establishing a new company - SwitchCo - to implement a marketing campaign promoting the take-up of digital terrestrial television. References are made to similar actions in Germany. My opinion on this is that government has been quite thoughtful and balanced in dealing with DTT take up and switch-off. Whereas the city of Berlin (the first areas to switch-off in Europe) confronted the public with a short transition period of almost one year the UK government seems to have decided to let the market decide on when to switch-off. In this case, I think that this is a wise approach…
