Tessa Jowell has apparently sparked controversy by saying that learning to watch television should be as important as maths or science.
Ms Jowell said she believed that �decoding� the media will become as important in life as understanding great literature and as integral to an education as sciences. She was speaking in advance of next week’s UK Film Council, Channel 4, the British Film Institute and BBC backed media literacy event.
In fact, she has probably understated the importance of media literacy. It will become - if it isn’t already - the key to active citizenship and informed consumption. Whilst maths is just done on a calculator, isn’t it?
