So Sayeth the Church Elders…
Today’s Media Guardian has several good pieces on Ofcom, PSBs, and overall UK media and communications policy by: Lucy Rouse (interviewing Lord McIntosh), David Puttnam, and Damian Tambini. All are worth reading, as they touch on the issues we have struggled with over the past year, and look forward to the numerous changes to come.
My only comment on the pieces is that each one shares a common frailty: over-confidence. I can’t help but feel that these writers and thinkers are too confident when they point to legal or regulatory provisions and apparently state with certainty that they will have a particular effect. I think the one thing we can say with certainty is that, in this industry, legal and regulatory initiatives often produce unexpected results.
