WSJ Report on the Mobile Phone Market

WSJ Report on the Mobile Phone Market

Today’s Wall Street Journal has a large report entitled: World Circuit: Cellphone Makers Pay a Heavy Toll For Missing Fads, covering the current challenges facing the mobile phone industry (it’s just next to the piece about U.S. hospitals arresting patients for not paying their bills ~ heart-warming stuff!).

The basic points of the report, from what I could glean are that:

* Motorola has been playing catch-up in this fast-moving game; and

* Asian consumer trends seem to lead the industry.

I’ve said this for at least 5 years now: They need a mobile phone that has a short-range payment system embedded…something I can point to a similarly-enabled vending machine (or point-of-sale terminals) and operate it without needing coins or cash. This is more important than an ability to play ‘Tony Hawk Pro Skater’ on a 2-inch screen.
