The Economist on the BBC’s Uncertain Future

The Economist has a nice piece (’Poor reception’) in this week’s (July 26-August 1) issue about the regulatory future of the BBC. The seven paragraph article says more about the future of the BBC than I could locate in the Beeb’s most recent annual report. Some snippets:

“[R]obust self-scrutiny is not a strong point of its bureacratic, inward-looking culture.”

“Although the BBC would resist Ofcom oversight furiously, the day-to-day difference would probably be minor.”

“The bigger question is about future financing [duh ~ Russ]. Technology is steadily undermining the BBC’s main justification for the license fee: that as everyone benefits from at least some of its services, everyone should pay.”

What I haven’t seen anywhere, including this article, is an analysis of the licensing fee in comparison to the resources available to the BBC’s current and future competitors (trends, projections, etc.). That I would like to see.
